In 2007, the North Flatbush Avenue BID worked hard to reach out and connect with Flatbush Avenue merchants.
One way in which the North Flatbush Avenue BID established closer ties with merchants was through the Young Adult Internship Program. This was a new program funded by the Department of Youth and Community Development to give short term employment to job-ready youth ages 16 to 24. Arbor Education and Training, a local community based organization, received the contract to provide skill development, work readiness training, career and educational planning and job placement and retention services for the participants. The North Flatbush Avenue BID received the sub-contract to seek out businesses and organizations to provide the Young Adult Internship Program participants with meaningful internships. The intern's wages were paid by the city. This program was an opportunity for the North Flatbush Avenue BID and merchants to do community based programming together. In exchange for receiving no-cost labor, the merchants gave these youth an invaluable opportunity and the chance to train and shape their work ethic. The first session of the program began December 3, 2007 and ended February 21, 2008. The following merchants extended job opportunities to the interns to help them gain employable skills:Harriet’s Alter Ego Brooklyn Center for Pyschotherapy Burrito Bar & Kitchen Champion Martial Arts Christian Science Reading Room Eladia’s RealtyEladia’s Kids ERA Top Service Realty Slope Heights Real Estate Mailboxes of Park Slope NY NaturalsThe UPS Store Law Office of Ryan S. Goldstein, PLLC North Eastern Network Wellness Center
We are pleased to inform that The UPS Store, the Law Offices of Ryan S. Goldstein, PLLC, Brownstone Billiards and the BrooklynCenter for Pyschotherapy are North Flatbush Avenue merchants that permanently hired interns who participated in the program.
We are looking forward to continuing this initiative in 2008. If you are a merchant that is interested in participating in the Young Adult Internship program, please contact the BID office at 718-783-1685 |
