- Actor Denis Leary, star of Rescue Me, inside of Kings Pharmacy
FX television Series, Rescue Me, starring Denis Leary, filmed interior and exterior episode scenes in our district on Tuesday, March 2, 2010. Film crews lined our streets on Flatbush Avenue from Park Place to Sterling early in the morning. Some of us were lucky enough to get inside Kings Pharmacy and watch the filming. Kings Pharmacy is a long time merchant of the BID offering the best in customer care, no wonder “tommy” chose to go there for his sundries. Visit Kings Pharmacy at 357 Flatbush Avenue between Park Place and Sterling, an established pharmacy for over 60 years. Their number one goal is patient satisfaction.

COMMUNITY NOTICE
Closure of Sections of Fifth Avenue and Pacific Street
Beginning on Monday, March 8, 2010
On Monday, March 8, 2010 by 6 AM, the following streets in Brooklyn will be permanently closed:
• Fifth Avenue (between Flatbush and Atlantic Avenues)
• Pacific Street (between Fifth and Sixth Avenues)
• Pacific Street (between Vanderbilt and Carlton Avenues)
Local and emergency vehicle access will be maintained as needed.
These streets are being closed to accommodate the Atlantic Yards project. Northbound traffic on Fifth Avenue can use Flatbush
Avenue or Sixth Avenue to continue north; southbound traffic can use Sixth Avenue. Eastbound traffic on Pacific Street can use
Dean Street; westbound traffic can use Bergen Street.
To facilitate vehicle circulation, Sixth Avenue (between Flatbush Avenue and Pacific Street) will become two-way and the block of
Pacific Street (between Carlton and Sixth Avenues) will become one-way westbound.
These changes necessitate the removal of the Cobble Hill-bound B63 bus stop on Fifth Avenue, between Pacific Street and Atlantic
Avenue. Passengers can use existing bus stops on Fifth Avenue (at Bergen Street) and on Atlantic Avenue (at Fourth Avenue).
Please see the detour map below.
Advisory signs will be posted in advance of the closures and detour signs will be posted during the work. Traffic agents will be
assigned to facilitate the flow of traffic and pedestrians.

After 7 years in our district, New York Naturals will be shuttering its doors by the end of February. Owner Joe Orr said that high rents and the economic downturn has kept him from stocking the store the way he would like to. Joe Orr is also one of the North Flatbush Avenue BID’s board member so we will be losing a friend as well. Right now, New York Naturals will be selling out the store until all inventory is diminished at 30-50% off. We wish Joe Orr well.
The BID welcomes 3 new merchants to our neighborhood.
Cafe Cubana, located at 80 6th Avenue, at the corner of Flatbush and St. Marks Avenue, is a welcome little casita with a traditional cuban menu including cuban sandwichand pulled pork with yuca.

Born Thai Restaurant
Born is our latest new Thai Restaurant located at 293 Flatbush Avenue between Prospect Place and St. Marks Avenue. Born has a pleasant atmosphere, friendly staff and an eye catching menu. Dont forget the BORN lunch Specials for only $9 served from 12:00 to 3:30pm.
Oasis Spa will soon open in our district before the end of February. Oasis will be a full service spa for Park Slopers.

Our new Merchant Sponsored Banners for 2010 are up and displayed along our Avenue.
One of the BID’s new initiaves for 2010 was a “Sponsor a Banner Program” for our district. We are happy with the overwhelming response of 6 merchant sponsors for a total of 30 new banners. This new intitiative got under way as a means to showcase our district merchants. The banners and our merchant’s logo will be visible to pedestrians and over 25,000 passing vehicles per day. The banners stand 9 feet tall along our city lamp posts. These poly vinyl banners were printed, produced and installed by Five Boro Flag, Banner and Sign Inc. of of Queens Village, New York. www.allstargraphics.com. Five Boro is responsible for the giant banners that hang in front of the Museum of Natural History. The BID’s banners will be adorned along our streets for approximately 5-6 months. When the banners are taken down, the BID donates them to First World Trash who handmake products almost entirely from recycled materials, such as banners and billboard materials. Our previous banners have been turned into durable urban totes, messenger bags and laptop sleeves. You can visit First World Trash by going to www.FirstWorldTrash.com and see the many products they have to offer.
If you or your business would like to participate in our next set of Sponsored Banners, please give the BID a call at 718-783-1685 or email us at info@nfbid.com. We will be happy to send out a MediaKit for you. And remember, we are a 501(c)3 non-profit organization so your sponsorship is tax deductible.

Pacific Street (between Fifth and Sixth Avenues)
Pacific Street (between Vanderbilt and Carlton Avenues)
Local and emergency vehicle access will be maintained as needed.

Dear New Yorker:
I am sure you have seen the news of the terrible suffering in Haiti. While the full toll of the devastation isn’t known yet, one thing is clear — the people of Haiti need our support. Many people have asked how they can help. With critical infrastructure still severely damaged, and reports of a bottleneck of food and supplies, we have been advised not to send goods. Right now the most pressing need is financial help.
To provide a secure vehicle for donations, the City established the Haiti Relief Fund at the Mayor’s Fund to Advance New York City. The Mayor’s Fund will ensure 100% of contributions are directed to reputable organizations that are providing relief in Haiti, such as the Red Cross, Doctors Without Borders, and UNICEF.

The North Flatbush Avenue BID hosted its first annual “Celebrate the Holidays on Flatbush Avenue” on Saturday, December 12 with all day festivities for children and holiday shoppers.
To kick off the event at noon, under the giant Oracle at Pintchik Hardware were Borough President Marty Markowitz and Councilwoman Letitia James. Members of the BID’s Board of Directors, Executive Director, merchants and residents greeted Marty as he spoke about his initiative Shop Brooklyn to the crowd. Our merchants, Prospect Perk Cafe, 183 Sterling Place, served Brookyn made muffins and free trade coffee. Ori Ziglindere and Murat Uyaroglu, owners talked “Turkey” with Marty Markowitz, as both are from Istanbul one of BP’s favorite vacation spots in the world. Also present were members of the 78th Precinct Community Council, Veronic Aveis from Congresswoman Yvette Clarke’s office. Councilwoman Letitia James kept the crowd warm with a sing-a-long of Jingle Bells, one of the BID’s favorite holiday songs.

Santa waves to the holiday shoppers.
Residents and holiday shoppers on Flatbush Avenue had a chance to wave to Santa on his elf driven Rickshaw all day, free candy canes were handed out from Santa’s elves, children’s face painting by Bert, free photos with santa, and a blood drive co-sponsored by Kings Pharmacy.
