Merchants gathered at the Christian Science Reading Room
On Wednesday, September 23, 2009 the BID sponsored a Merchant Meeting at the Christian Science Reading Room for all the BID merchants to discuss a great advertising opportunity.
Mathew Pintchik, of Pintchik Hardware store talked about our new Sponsor a Banner Program that is an affordable means of advertising for the businesses on Flatbush Avenue. We have opend up the program to all our merchants so that they have the opportunity to purchase 1, 2 or 3 banners instead of the entire set.
Jay Pelc, from CNG Local, the source for all our Brooklyn newspapers, spoke to the merchants about a cooperative effort the BID is looking into parternering with the merchants during the holiday season. Jay told the crowd that they can have the opportunity to advertise their business on a full page ad for as little as $140.00.
Sharon Davidson, Director of the BID, spoke about a new holiday shopping initiative she is planning for the merchants called “Shop and Dine on Flatbush Avenue“. On Saturday, December 12 from 2:30pm to 7:30pm the BID plans a full day of activities along the avenue to bring shoppers to our district during the holiday season. If you take a walk along our repaved Flatbush Avenue , you may noticed some utility trucks and cuts in the street in the past few days at the corners of Sterling Place.
Now you may be asking…. why are they digging up the street right after Flatbush Avenue was just repaved? Well, the work is not from MTA or DOT but a combination of a contractor doing water repair for DEP and Con Edison. Also, there is utility work going on on Flatbush Avenue near Atlantic Avenue in association with the Atlantic Yards.
Once a roadway is paved it receives a “protective” status for a number of years, however that does not prevent utility cuts, just that the permit fees are more expensive and stipulations for how the road must be restored are stricter.
The BID’s representative from the Department of Transportation has explained to us that he will ensure that the contractors restore the pavement after they have completed with the work. They will be required to restore the pavement fully from the edge of their work to the curb or restore half of the roadway, rather than just patching over their cuts.

Donating blood is literally giving the gift of life. Each day, the NYBlood Center needs close to 2000 people a day to roll up their sleeves to give the gift of life. There is simply no substitute for voluntary donated blood. Without volunteer donors, our community would not have an adequate community blood supply. 4 million Americans benefit from life-saving transfusions sometime during their lifetime.
The North Flatbush Avenue Business Improvement District teamed up with the New York Blood Center and hosted a Blood Drive on Friday, August 28 from 2:30pm to 7:30pm. Co-sponsored by CRUNCH, HEALTHY NIBBLES and KINGS PHARMACY. By the end of the cold and rainy day, the BID reached their goal of volunteers. Each volunteer blood donor walked away with complimentary tote bags filled with free 1 month Crunch memberships, power bars, t-shirts, bottled water , organic juices and discount coupons from our local merchants. Burrito Bar and Kitchen offered a coupon for a free Marguerita! We want to thank the NYBlood Center for proviing us with a quality professional medical team and Staff. Giving blood was painless and anxiety free! Did you know that you can donate blood every 56 days? Please join us at our next blood drive on Saturday, December 12, 2009 from 2:30PM to 7:30PM in front of KINGS PHARMACY and gift the gift of life. Become a Volunteer Blood Donor...
