Safety Improvements for the Carlton Ave/Park Place intersection
As a result of study requested by the Park Heights Neighborhood Development Council in coordination with the North Flatbush Avenue BID, Brooklyn DOT has planned safety improvements to the intersection of Flatbush Avenue, Carlton Avenue and Park Place also known as the Carlton Avenue Triangle.
The intersection has long been perceived by area residents as dangerous for pedestrians in our District. We listened to your complaints and a plan was set forth.
DOT used pavement markings and flexible bollards to channelize vehicles turning right from Flatbush Avenue onto Carlton Avenue. We hope that by implementing this design, vehicles turning speeds will be reduced as a result. The corner of Flatbush Avenue and Carlton will be “daylighted” through the implementation of flexible bollards and a 20 foot No Standing Anytime zone, which should improve the “sight distance” that pedestrians crossing Carlton Avenue have of oncoming vehicles. Finally, it will be possible to implement two new marked crosswalks as as a result of the changes here.
There is a new bicycle path from Flatbush Avenue heading north towards Carlton Avenue for safety. This plan was completed in August 2009.

Press Release
*For Immediate Release *MEDIA ALERT* August 12, 2009
Brooklyn, New York –The North Flatbush Avenue Business Improvement District can finally announce the winner of 2008 Holiday Silent Auction winner of lunch with Borough President Marty Markowtiz!!
So the winner of the North Flatbush Avenue Business Improvement District’s 2008 Holiday Silent Auction of lunch with Borough President Marty Markowitz has been identified!!Martie McNabb, owner of Brooklyn’s own small business Memories Out of the Box, ponied up the highest bid, winning a change to break bread at Juniors Rerstaurant at Juniors Restaurarnt with Brooklyn Borough President, Marty Markowitz. And it was only a coincidence that it is MARTIE AND MARTY that will be breaking bread together… !!
Each year, the BID hosts a Holiday Silent Auction in December to benefit the children’s programming in the Pacific St. Bears Community Garden. The BID’s auction in 2008 was by far the most successful to date with many items up for grabs from store merchants and lunch or dinner from many restaurants that included both Brooklyn and Manhattan. Arthur Schwartz, Brooklyn’s own Food Maven was up for grabs for lunch as well. But it was lunch with the Borough President that attracted the most bids and the highest bids, by far.
Martie McNabb, said she was “thrilled to elbow out the rest of the bidders to secure this special lunch with the Borough President.” And indeed it was a special lunch as the threesome talked about the BP’s support of small businesses, which Memories out of the Box is one. Marty Markowitz told the story to the duo how he and his wife, Jamie met on Manhattan Beach and how different they are from each other. It was then that Martie McNabb offered the BP a gift certificates to her own small business so that the BP can take those photos “out of the box” and put them into a memorable book as a gift to his wife, of course. The motto for memories out of the Box is “Honor your life: make time for your memories”!
For information on the North Flatbush BID’s 2009 Holiday Silent Auction and how you can be involved and bid on some of the great items,up for grabs check out www.nfbid.com for more information. The BID is keeping its fingers crossed that the BP will on board again for 2009!
